Kindling

Chelsea

“Ryan left Jenna.”

Chelsea was still in total shock after her visit with Jenna. Of all the things, she had not expected that. Not ever. It just didn’t... It didn’t make any sense.

Everyone has secrets.

You can’t know anyone.

You were wrong about Ryan, too.

“He what?” Mark looked genuinely shocked by that, and she watched his expression to see what kind of shock it was.

“He was having an affair. He got the other woman pregnant.” The words sat like a lump of sand in her throat.

She continued to watch Mark’s face. Was he judging Ryan? Did it seem unfathomable to him that Ryan could have broken his vows like that?

Mark breathed out, hard, and shook his head. But didn’t say anything. So Chelsea kept on talking.

“I’m... I’m livid. He’s my big brother. He... I never thought he would do something like that. He was always perfect.”

“He was never perfect, Chelsea. You all just think he is. Your parents tell you that he is, all the time. But he isn’t. He’s just... He’s basic. Honestly.”

“Are you upset that he did that? Or are you just wanting to trash my brother?” She started hunting around for a cigarette. One her husband wouldn’t let her smoke in the house.

But why did he get to decide that?

Who were they, anyway?

He was this good finance guy who thought cigarettes were bad but had committed robberies, apparently, and he got to judge her?

“Are we not supposed to trash your brother when he leaves his wife for another woman?”

“Of course we are. But I haven’t even talked to him. I only talked to Jenna. I don’t know if I can talk to him. I just... I can’t believe that they’re going to get a divorce. Ryan and Jenna. Ryan and Jenna. I can barely think of one of them without thinking of the other.” She shook her head. “This is just... It doesn’t make any sense. They’re great together.”

Mark just stared at her. And she couldn’t figure out what he was thinking.

Because she didn’t know him. So how could she guess?

They’d built this perfect life, but the house was starting to cave in around them.

There were cracks in the foundation.

And there was no one to blame but herself.
